Our Focus Area

What are the qualities we look for?

Self-motivated and eager to learn new knowledge

We have very flexible lab hours as forcing students to perform research and write papers simply does NOT work. We should make progress but other than that, you have to manage yourself.

Writing a paper is a very creative and surprisingly fun task. We want students who honestly believe that.

Interested in big data processing in big scale

We are more interested in processing the ever-increasing data in perspective of HPC, Blockchain, IoT, ML and more. This involves a comprehensive understanding of computers from CPU, cache, memory, on&off site interface, and storage devices to file systems, operating systems, cloud management, database and HPC.

BUT.. you do NOT have to know all this. (I do not know them as well!) If you want to know what they are and how they work under the hood, you are welcome in our lab!

Daily Report:

Lab Hours

Monday ~ Friday: 10 AM to 4 PM

Vacation: 5 days per each Summer and Winter Vacation

Flexible personal day off for any personal occasion, remote work, etc.

Daily checkup via slack

We ask our team members to submit daily reports to our Slack channel. Here, they answer two simple questions. Are you in the lab? What did you do today in 1-2 sentences? This helps everyone stay on the same page.

Bi-weekly Presenation:

Monthly Seminar

"Standing on the shoulders of giants" - Isaac Newton and front page of google scholar.

There is no new research without knowledge of prior research.

We ask our team members to give a 30-minute presentation of researchers from previous top conferences such as SOSP, OSDI, FAST, SC, HPDC, VLDB and much more!

Bi-weekly Progress Report

Research is a long and complex job. We need a save point!

We ask our team members to give a 5 to 10-minute presentation on what they did for the past 2 weeks. You can get feedback from me (professor) or your fellow researchers!

Community of Researchers:

Biweekly meetings

Biweekly seminars and progress meetings promote open-minded communication among fellow researchers, including myself. You are expected to focus on the presentations and provide honest feedback. This healthy research cycle is the key to success within our research group.

Networking Opportunities

Our team connects with other researchers around the world and you will have chance to communicate with them. Our key collaborators include SNU, CAU, Berkeley Lab, OSU, Samsung, and more!

Ready to Join?:

If you're ready to join the adventure, apply now by sending a CV, and 1-page research plan to me (sunggonkim@seoultech.ac.kr)!

If you are an undergraduate student who has an idea but wants some guidance, I can also help you to write a paper, consult you on your career path, or my experience from studying abroad. So please do not hesitate to send me an email! :)
